Artist statement:

My artistic practice can be described as stemming from two principal focuses. The first is the creation of an erotica devoid of lust, an attempt of representing what popular sexual culture feels like as an asexual person. My relationships with sexuality as a cisgender woman, a person of color and a Puerto Rican play a role in my explorations. My second focus lies within another relationship with my body, that of my chronic illness. My figures, in a way, function as self-fantasy; as a way to exist as a woman removed from the sexual connotations inescapable in Western society and a vehicle through which I can express the constant awareness of my perceived otherness from the general population as a chronically ill person, all of this through a critical lens.

Through mixed media, I can make tangible the multifaceted nature of my conflicting thoughts about my body, sex and modern culture. In the crudeness of the materials, the unrefined visual language of the figures and the almost dissociative spaces within the compositions I push against the historical baggage of the field of Painting and its associations with beauty, luxury, power and the divine.
