Artist statement:
My practice stems from perpetual self-exploration on the notion of body, informed by my cultural background, chosen identities and embodied experiences. My primary obsession is the creation of asexual erotica- erotica that evokes my sensual reality as someone on the furthest end of the asexual spectrum. Cut up, layered and stitched together paintings on canvas explore the different performances that images of the human body have represented throughout history and propose a deconstruction of the importance society places on sexual dynamics.
I’m interested in applying Lordean asexual readings on the erotic to the relationship between observers and images, taking into consideration the role of images in the structures of compulsory sexuality. Through fostering sensual relationships to artworks, I hope to facilitate questions around the centralization of sex as a mode of understanding what it means to be human.
